Tricks or treats?

A quick stop to the Goodwill Outlet shortly before Halloween, revealed a handful of treats and a few tricks as well. The collection of vintage 8mm horror movies were definitely a treat…but a few silver pieces that seemed to be stamped as sterling but turned out to likely be silver plated were a little bit of a trick (but I should know better). None the less, it was a good haul. Here’s the video link for this set of finds: https://youtu.be/LuSxNv1RbYo

Scooby Doo where are you?

Check out this haul from about four different trips to the Goodwill Outlets in Indy and the Salvation Army in Bloomington (where I found the ceramic rooster planter). Among my most treasured Goodwill finds were a Minnesota Model X Sewing Machine (which seems to have been built around 1912-1913 according to all the great info I found on the Victorian Sweatshop Message Board, some OPA ration tokens from WWII that had apparently been used as bingo markers by the previous owner (I learned more about these from the site: Owlcation), part of a vintage toy car called “Nifty,” some cool metal tins, some Ruth Reeves linen napkins, and a lot of vintage greeting cards and doll clothes patterns, and a life-size Scooby Doo advertising display.

Tiny treasures

I only had a little over an hour to duck into the Goodwill after a conference in Indianapolis…but I still managed to find a couple treasures that I look forward to using as part of assemblages or other craft projects. I think my favorite finds this time around were the tiny soldier in white and the teeny tiny horse cookie cutter – I have never seen one so small and adore it…as well as the thought of some little person that used it to make tiny treats for a tea party, perhaps.

Good enough

When I got home from the Goodwill Outlets yesterday, Devin and Chris were watching Goonies…which Devin had apparently never seen that before. I don’t know how that’s the case because Goonies is one of those movies I usually stop to watch at least a little bit of every time I happen upon it randomly on TV. I love the theme song “Good Enough” by Cyndi Lauper…and whenever I hear it it always makes me think of Goonies. My last two trips to the thrift store haven’t given me anything I’d call an epic treasure, but they’ve been Good Enough.

The line art images are from a McCalls magazine from February 1910. I also snapped photos of some ads from Saturday Evening Post Magazines from 1943 and 1963. Among the other treasures were two bride dolls – possible Madame Alexander (but I need to do a little more research). Also displayed are some Easter gifts I made for family members today…all pieces are from the Goodwill (with the exception of the rabbit images I found on the Graphics Fairy website). There’s also a picture of my new doll house (thanks to Evie for finding it up in Indy) and the box of vintage ornaments I found when I went up to Indy for my Dad’s birthday last weekend. All in all, I’d say things things are definitely “Good Enough” for my April thrifting thus far!

Toys and other treasures

Over the last two weeks I’ve managed to make it to all three of the Goodwill Outlets in Indy. I found the toy buggy on a quick trip when I ran up midweek for work and found the doll house yesterday – along with some great holiday decor, a vintage bread box and a Redmon basket that has seen better days but may still have a little life left in it.

Treasures in 2 hours for under $20?

I had about two hours to spend between family events at the Goodwill outlet in Greenwood this weekend. The fact that this outlet is a little smaller than the others in the Indy area actually made it a little easier to navigate in a shorter period of time and it certainly did not disappoint in terms of the types of treasures I was able to uncover. There’s treasure in trash if you aren’t afraid _to_ hunt…meant to put the number 2 in there since I couldn’t find more T’s but forgot!

If objects could tell stories

My niece Evie made it to the finals in several events for her state swim meet yesterday. Great for her, but good for me too since it gave me a chance to go shopping before going to see her swim in the finals. I went to the Goodwill Outlet on the west side of Indy because my parents were having lunch, and it seemed to be the closest option to Evie’s meet.

The first great find of the day was a vintage cooking set – similar to one I remember playing with at my Granny’s house when I was a kid. It looks like it was designed to be something like an easy bake oven – with a power cord that had been cut off (probably for the best since it was a little rough…and definitely old). I loved the stove, but the thing that delighted me about it even more was finding a little note tucked inside along with some of the tiny metal pots and trays that said it had been owned by Janet Kinsey Beanblossom and she’d received it around 1944.

I was also surprised to learn a little more about the creators of another object I’d found – a tiny dollhouse dresser. I had to scavenge through the bin to find all the pieces, and didn’t notice it at the time, but it seems to have been signed by its creators on the bottom of one of the drawers.

The next great treasure of the day was a 1919 Singer Sewing Machine. Whenever I find a vintage machine I love thinking about all the outfits or home decor items that had been sewn on it…and all the hours that its former owner would have spent on it stitching those items. Admittedly, this one is in rough shape…but it is still a treasure…having survived for more than 100 years and also surviving the Goodwill Outlet bins. I found the base earlier in the day but didn’t see the machine…so I ended up letting the base go…but I realize in hindsight that I should have grabbed it and put it back if I didn’t find the machine…because I later discovered the top of the wooden traveling case…and then the machine itself.

Serving up more treasures

While athletes were battling it out at Wimbledon, I was scouring the goodwill outlet on Indy’s east side for some treasures.

I loved how the patterns kind of tell a story…outfits for a young woman, a sexy bathrobe for a man, a wedding dress, maternity outfits, and kids clothing.

I also experimented with a live walkthrough of these items if you are interested in seeing any up-close: https://fb.watch/eczwB0yXAn/ – feel free to check it out and let me know what you think.
