I LOVE thrifting/Thrifting Bingo

There are a few things that I can’t resist when I thrift (its like a thrifting Bingo if you will): vintage games, wooden spools of thread, puzzles, vintage holiday decor, vintage cook books, rulers, horse things,  chalkboard, paperdolls and Nancy Drew Books. Today, on my two Goodwill Outlet stops in Indy I found everything except the last one on my list.  My favorite finds: sheet music for Star Dust, which I’m looking forward to gifting, and several vintage valentines and games.

I also found a lovely vintage bingo game set and a mind-teaser puzzle. Both had several small pieces, which I combed through various bins to find…and then I proceeded to drop the stack I was holding into a bin, and then onto a floor, and even after I finally moved everything to my cart, I somehow managed to drop everything once more. Admittedly, It was not my finest day, but thankfully there were folks who were kind enough to help me each time.

Whenever I dig through bins to find pieces of puzzles or games, I always assume that I’m not going to find everything…so I wasn’t too sad when things fell all over the floor (repeatedly) – more embarrassed, really (but I’ll chalk it up to not having any lunch).   I didn’t drop any of the puzzle pieces I collected, yet I only came close to finishing one of the many puzzles who’s pieces I collected. Miraculously, I ended up with all the pieces of the Bingo game and the puzzle game (thanks to my husband’s help; after I gave up looking, he kept combing through cards and boxes and managed to find the few of each that I was missing).

Here are my take away lessons from today’s thrifting adventure: 1) pay attention to the small stuff; it would have been so easy to miss out on all the fabulous valentines I found today (in fact, I felt like my repeated spills of other game pieces kept leading me back to find more valentines), 2) bags and carts are your friend, and  3) have lunch!

Raindrops keep falling on my head

There was a horrible thunderstorm that came through central Indiana on my way back from Indianapolis this evening, but even that couldn’t put a damper on another wonder day of Goodwill Outlet Thrifting.

Below: an “Almanac” advertisement for Rawleigh’s.

Above a vintage alarm clock with a music box that plays Edelweiss (circa 1940s-60s). Below a sweet poem and some vintage photographs.

Toys!  Above a Playskool “Pounding Bench” and below a vintage Gerber baby doll.

I loved the graphics on the viewmaster canister above…even though it was damaged and missing the actual projector, I couldn’t resist.  I did, however find a few view master reels over the course of the day.  Now I feel like its a mission to find my old view master so I can try them out…

Below, a vintage “Pachisi” game, only 3 of the original wooden pieces were left but the board and box were in decent shape. I found a few other dice as well…I always try to pick up random dice when I stumble across them because they are fun and functional.

I found a few random notions and wooden bobbins today – the majority of which went to my sister.

I think this set of cookie cutters was my favorite find of the day.  There are some fun shapes that I’m looking forward to making.

Below: a few nativity decorations.

I’ve found my share of incomplete puzzles – but I took a chance on a puzzle that I found in a plastic baggie…I didn’t know what the image would turn out to be, but that’s half the fun.  I was delighted to find that it was a Coca-Cola advertisement.

Garage Sale Goodies

It was a beautiful day in Bloomington…with temperatures barely reaching into the 80s and pleasant breeze blowing throughout the day. As I was running errands around town, I decided to stop in to a few garage sales to see what kinds of treasures I could find.  I was delighted to find this vintage children’s book for only $3!  There’s no publication date, but online estimates put it between 1907 and 1920.

I also found this set of cards–a fun throw back to the 70s.  Sadly it turned out to be missing one card, but for only ten cents, it was well worth the risk and still provided a fun trip down memory lane.

Animal Rummy - with Yogi Bear

I also got a Spanish language CD set for only 50 cents, but the first disc was missing…which made me think of a cassette set I’d gotten a few months back, which was also missing the first tape. Its perhaps too soon to call it a trend, but it seems like a lot of would-be Spanish Language-learners don’t make it past the first set of lessons.  I might give it a go and try diving into disc two.

I also want to give a shout out to Chrissy and the kids–we hosted our annual garage sale last weekend. Didn’t make a lot, but we had some fun.  This year’s theme was a Carnival/Circus of Savings.

West Coast Thrifting

I had a short break in the action yesterday and decided to hit a few thrift stores in West LA after seeing a sign that said “bargains this way.” I found a Goodwill and a local charity shop that benefited stray cats.  The Goodwill cart in LA was much smaller than it is back in the Midwest, but they made an awesome announcement when they were rolling a new cart of items out onto the floor – they asked that everyone kindly refrain from shopping until it had come to rest. I guess the excitement about a new cart-full of treasures is the same everywhere! I also found a cool vintage puzzle at the cat thrift store and a fun marble maze.  Not bad for an hour’s worth of thrifting in tinsel town!

We couldn’t resist…

Another weekend, another massive Goodwill Hunting Spree in Indy (two in Carmel and one in Westfield).  I found a great set of IKEA floating shelves that will look perfect in my craft room – and are very much needed since we moved a lot of our boardgames up from the living room.

Chrissy’s newest Goodwill obsession are the t-shirts – because they make her laugh.  Think of it like funny jokes or memes on Facebook and Pinterest – only in a textile format.  I have to agree, she found some good ones this time around.

I also found some great puzzles (yes, I know I said that I was cutting back but I couldn’t resist). The Map puzzle not only turned out to have all the pieces and be two-sided, but it dated to the 30’s based on the countries that were found on the world map.  My guess would still be a little later based on the colors, but it definitely has a vintage look and feel, and a pleasant vintage scent.

As always, I had fun finding funky things to try out with Anna.  Including an organ, a scale a time-out chair and a water bottle belt for marathon running (or goodwill shopping).

Other odds and ends…

More Thrifty Stops in Franklin

After the fairgrounds, with only about an hour left to spare before I had to head back to Bloomington, we made a mad dash to three other antique/salvage sites in Franklin.

The Salvage Sisters Antique Market, Thanks for the Thyme and Madison Street Salvage.

I found a going away gift for a friend (a Kellogg’s promotion from the 30s that featured facts about different US states and cities). Chrissy found a desk.

Later that day I also found some old veneer that I used to make a Indiana-shaped gift tag for the going-away gift.
