Here’s my response to Kim: I’ve not had a lot of luck learning about the dates when different types of Redmon baskets were manufactured and sold. I believe the woven ones with the wooden handles are the oldest, followed by ones with metal handles (but still woven), and the more modern ones are made with a fabric-like material.

My somewhat unfulfilling quest for more info ultimately led me to create a website: https://jenni929.wixsite.com/redmon and I also learned a little more through a reporter who reached out to the company for more info: https://www.sentinelsource.com/elf/pickin_and_pokin/don-t-you-just-love-a-picnic/article_3a6d7d5c-36ee-11ee-b046-77e93639f138.html. That reporter was able to confirm my suspicion that baskets with the “Redman” label are older and that the switch from “Redman” to “Redmon” was in response to cultural shifts happening after the mid-century mark: “In 1960 when the Indian Nations took exception to the use of their image by Pontiac as a hood ornament for their cars and sued GM, we thought it best to avoid confrontation and changed to Redmon. The baskets with the RED-MAN name and image are now more sought after by collectors and bring the higher prices.”

It’s on my bucket list to visit Peru (Indiana) someday soon in hopes of learning a little more!
